Welcome! 2017 New Quilt Bloggers: Blooming Quilters

First, I want to apologize for my delay in posting for the week and Blogging event. Life sometimes overcomes many priorities and wishes, as all of us has discovered at one time or another.

My name is Anita and I live in a tiny town in West Virginia. I have much Mountaineer pride and am an alumni of West Virginia University.

My love for quilts started with my grandmother, Flossie Agra. She did mostly applique quilts with floral pieces. They were lovely. I've been on a search for one of her quilts for many years.

I dabbled a little with sewing and attempting to create a quilt about 25 years ago with no instruction of how to construct it. It came out okay, but I never saved a picture of it nor do I still have the quilt.

Then about 3 years ago, my grand daughter came to live with me full time and my activities changed greatly. I needed something to occupy my mind and time since I keep her now. My husband and I were in the throws of empty nest syndrome and loving our new-found freedom! Again, there goes one of life's surprises thrown at us! We sold our motorcycles and became full-time parents again!

I went back to quilting and found that I loved it! I follow after my grandmother, I really like appliques but do most of mine by machine.

One of my tips for raw edge applique is to use a basting medium such as Heat n Bond Lite to secure the applique prior to machine stitching. It has worked great for me every time!

I also use quilting gloves to turn my fabrics when stitching appliques to save from getting finger cramps. Give it a try!

  1. I hope everything is well with you, Anita! No worries for posting late. I was born in Parkersburg, WV, and my dada grew up in Charleston. Small world! I would definitely be a log cabin. I like the thought of adding new layers and depth as the years and adventures go by. Thank you for being part of the hop!

    1. That is a great way think of the cabin! Most responses turned out to be the Log Cabin block. I was thinking of myself as more of a free-hand flower with lots of sway.

  2. Anita, I love your question. I was thinking Mariner's Compass or Storm at Sea but really I would like a Calm Sea block....wonder if there is one? Maybe I should draw one up....who knows where inspiration comes from!

  3. I enjoyed reading more about you, Anita. As much as I would love to be a Medallion Star block, today I would compare myself to a Storm at Sea. I think it changes day-to-day.

  4. Hi Anita, nice meeting you and learning you are a Mountaineer. My nephew is a Professor at WVU and I had the pleasure of making a WVU quilt for his son last year. If I were a quilt block, it would be something simple like nine patch but there are so many fabric variations you can use to make them. Have fun on the Blog Hop!

    1. Wonderfully small world! What does your nephew teach? My youngest son is currently attending. I am so proud! I love Blue and Gold (wearing my pride shirt right now!)

  5. What a fun question! I think I might be a log cabin block. I grew up on a farm and would love to live to simple life. I have a six year old grandson that keeps me busy! I work one day a week in his classroom and do all the extras. He's lots of fun but some nights I do need my heating pad, hehe.

I'm a new follower and look forward to checking out your blog.

    1. My dream is to be a farmer... a Pumpkin Farmer... I've always told my husband when I grow up... that is what I'll be.

  6. This is a great question. I think I would be Robbing Peter to Pay Paul. I am constantly juggling my priorities, but they all seem to work out in the end.

  7. I think I would be a log cabin. That was my very first quilt ever that I made. And I still have it. It is so soft and cuddly now. Thank you for sharing your story with us today.

  8. Hi Anita, visiting from the hop. My grandmother taught me to sew too. I don't have my first quilt either, it went to charity.

    1. I am just venturing into prepping a quilt for charity. What great avenues to keep us quilting! I could not possibly use the quilts I've been working on the past few years, and I find I don't like them quite as much or the color scheme is not right... Donating is best!

  9. Nice to "meet" you! If I were a quilt block I think I'd be some sort of improv block. In life I'm pretty laid back and have a "go with the flow" personality. Which is funny because when I quilt I NEED a plan. Lol.

    1. I've usually needed a pattern for a quilt, but just recently went for it with a throw together design. I've learned I can put one together much more quickly without adhering to patterns.

  10. Nice to "meet" you, Anita! Hubby and I have been enjoying our empty nest for several years now. It always throws us for a loop when something happens and we have a house full again for a time. If I were a block...hmm...I'm sure it would be some sort of applique and something very goofy.

  11. Nice to meet you, Anita! I love the sentence, "We sold our motorcycles and became full-time parents again!" Parenting is its own adventure, that's for sure!

I think I would be a Ohio Star (my favorite star block). Simple. Classic. Works on it's own or with other blocks. Such a fun question!

    1. Definitely! Raising a child is not the same as it was 25 years ago! Great Block choice, I like your reasoning!

  12. hello Anita, I would definitely be a wonky block of some sort, sometimes cool and elegant and sometimes bright and loud! It is a shame you don't have any of your grandmother's quilts, hopefully you will find one

  13. Hi Anita, what a fab question, I think I would be a pinwheel, sums me up really, going round in circles….well my mind does at least! Lovely to meet you

  14. Hello Anita! Loved reading about you! One of the places I'd love to visit is West Virginia, it seems like a beautiful state! If I was a quilt block, I think I'd be an applique pumpkin!

  15. A lovely intro post Anita. I don't know what kid of block I would be, but it would be the wonky improv type, my quilting and blogging life is organised chaos.

  16. Hi, lovely to meet you & your blog! I think I'd be a wonky star, there's just something about them that catches my fancy every time :)

  17. Hi Anita, I think if I were a quilt block I would be some type of classic star whose maker did their best to match the points up perfectly, but some are a little off :P Nice to meet you and visit your blog!
